IDLES – Cheerleader
IDLES’ “Cheerleader” arrives as part of their ambitious collaboration with director Darren Aronofsky for the “Caught Stealing” soundtrack. The Bristol punk band contributed four original tracks to the crime thriller, marking a significant departure from their usual festival circuit into cinema.
Frontman Joe Talbot describes the opportunity as “a lucid dream” that began with a chance backstage meeting at The Tonight Show. For a band that’s built its reputation on raw, politically charged punk anthems, scoring a major motion picture represents both artistic validation and creative challenge.
“Cheerleader” sits alongside IDLES tracks “Doom,” “Police & Thieves,” and “Rabbit Run” in the film’s sonic landscape, which follows Austin Butler’s character through New York’s criminal underworld. The soundtrack seamlessly blends the band’s aggressive energy with composer Rob Simonsen’s cinematic score, creating tension that serves as a perfect complement to Aronofsky’s gritty vision.
This collaboration feels natural for IDLES, whose music has always carried cinematic weight. Their ability to channel raw emotion through punk frameworks translates well to film scoring, where atmosphere is just as important as melody. Talbot’s acknowledgement that Aronofsky’s films “have in some ways made me who I am as an artist” suggests this partnership runs deeper than typical soundtrack placement.
